JUSTICE LEAGUE (S.C.) - Movie Review (7/10)
Folks, I have come here to say one thing I never thought I would: Zack Snyder’s Justice League is good. Quite possibly one of the strongest to come out of this new generation of DC movies (Joker still takes the cake, but this is up there). Maybe my reaction is overblown considering I went into this movie fully expecting to dislike it, as how could you improve that drastically on what came out of Joss Wheadon’s hands in 2017, but Snyder’s rehaul (restoration?) fixes most of the issues with tone, dialogue, characters, jokes, and everything else between. Being at four hours, even if you have seen the original, it brings enough new material to the plate to make it worth a second try. The first improvement comes in the form of characters: Batman doesn’t take a full 360 from his previous appearance, Flash remains the comic relief, but steers clear of obnoxiousness, Aquaman holds his dark sense of self, Wonder Woman gets an extended story, Superman’s character is held back and made much more consistent, and Cyborg gets a rework so drastic that he jumps from the bottom of the barrel to near the top in terms of depth. They do not bicker unnecessarily at every opportunity: they all realize there is a job to be done and their team develops very organically. Most of the unfunny jokes are gone – which helps keep the tone very consistent while also allowing the team to have their good moments (Flash/Aquaman hat scene was my favourite by far). The question of length is debatable, many scenes are quite lengthier than they necessarily need to be, but I found myself consistently engaged after the first hour was up and the story picked up a good pace. Snyder does not bring revolutionarily filmmaking, but what he presents is a strong, heartfelt story that manages to finally convince you that these people could ever become friends in real life. The ending was also quite good – no spoilers, but it managed to leave me pleasantly surprised.
P.S. Please stop making the Flash run like that – I cannot see my favourite DC hero get held back by his goofy-ass running pose.
