Iain Reid’s I’m Thinking Of Ending Things is the type to story you have to read twice, once to experience it and a second time to truly understand it. Does that mean the first read a complete mess? Well, when it wants to be, but the true context of the story, those little conversations Reid shoves in between the chapters, they are his clue to what the book is truly about. Essentially, I’m Thinking Of Ending Things is a book about conversations. They may not always be about the “plot”, but they exist to provide an insight into the characters. Every scene, every metaphor, every unrelated tidbit manages to come back at the head-spinning ending. I don’t wish to tell you what the book is about because that in itself would be telling you too much. Just understand this: do not go into this book expecting an intricate and exhaustive plot. You will be disappointed. But if you want to experience a character piece, one that will linger beside you long after you’ve turned the final page, one that shows an understanding of human nature and self-loathing, one that might make you question the meaning of your own life, then this should be the next book you experience.
