THE MARROW THIEVES - Book Review (2/10)

The book thinks itself to be much better than it actually is. Whilst set in the future, the Marrow Thieves presents nothing new and/or groundbreaking other than the representation it brings to indigenous cultures of North America. I even doubt that achievement as the characters here are generic - each is delegated to one or two characteristics and stays there for most of the book. The writing itself is bland and even cringe worthy at times, and the plot of a journey across the country does little to spice up the environment. The books isn't garbage - certain scenes illustrate a potential for good writing (the moose hunting scene being my favorite), but these short scenes are overshadowed by the whole lot of bleh. Maybe it would work better for an adult audience where the themes can be explored completely because the current approach does not stick. This is quite a serious and heavy topics - not many stories in popular media cover the genocide of the indigenous people. Its instance on a romance subplot wastes a lot of time, and even makes room for an out-of-nowhere love triangle that ends as fast as it begins. Basically, there is potential in the novel, but the only way to achieve it would end up bringing so many changes that the novel wouldn't resemble its current form anymore. Read it if you want, but there isn't anyone that I would recommend this to.
